UPDATE: DiCaprio to Topline ‘Akira’, Director Confirmed!

Originally posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 by MrDisgusting @

UPDATE: AICN adds that Joseph Gordon Levitt (Brick) will play Tetsuo! It was confirmed this afternoon our breaking news from last October (!) that Ruairi Robinson will direct the live-action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros. Pictures. THR added a little something extra… Leonardo DiCaprio has been tapped to star in what will be a two-part epic! Read on for the entire story.

The anime classic “Akira” is getting the live-action big screen treatment courtesy of Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Bros.

Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct what would ideally be a two-part epic. Gary Whitta is writing the adaptation, which DiCaprio will produce via his Appian Way shingle. Andrew Lazar is also producing via his Mad Chance shingle. Jennifer Davisson, who heads up Appian, will also be involved in some producorial capacity.

“Akira” originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war “New Tokyo” in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang’s leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction.

With its mature themes and cutting-edge animation, “Akira” was a milestone movie in anime and even animation circles, and led the way for anime making inroads into Western pop culture in the 1990s.

“Akira” has long been in development at the company, with producers Jon Peters and Basil Iwanyk involved at various times, as well as directors Stephen Norrington and Pitof. The rights lapsed but Warner managed to re-scoop them again for Robinson, who came to the studio with a vision of a two-part adaptation.

The new story moves the action to “New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money.

The studio is eyeing a summer 2009 release for the first movie.

Greg Silverman is overseeing for Warners.

Whitta, repped by UTA and Circle of Confusion, wrote “The Book of Eli,” which the Hughes Brothers are directing for Warners and Silver Pictures.

“Akira” would mark the feature directorial debut for Robinson who was nominated for a best animated short Oscar in 2001 for a sci-fi comedy called “Fifty Percent Grey.” He also wrote and directed a sci-fi short titled “The Silent City” (watch it at BDTV), Robinson is repped by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Akira’ Live Action Remake Finds Director!!!

Originally posted on Sunday, October 28, 2007 by MrDisgusting @

One of the greatest post-apocalyptic thrillers ever told was the animated Manga Akira, which saw an announcement wayyyy back in July of 2003 that James Robinson would pen the adaptation with director Steven Norrington. I’m sure this has long passed, but we do have something official that just leaked to us through the grapevine, something that’s going to blow your socks off. We’ve been informed that Warner Bros. Pictures is trying to get Akira off the ground pre-strike and have attached 29-year-old Oscar nominated Irish director Ruairi Robinson! No more details have been revealed other than he directed a mind blowing short film entitled The Silent City, which can be viewed over at BDTV. Watch this spot for more news soon and cross your fingers that this sucker gets rolling ASAP.

Happy Birthday Akira2019 is now one year old, it almost happened without me noticing. Man what a crappy year I’ve had, let’s hope the next one is better.

What can we expect with this new year? well most of what I’ve been meaning to do, content, content and more content. Plus many new and improved optimisations to get this site kicking some ass. Well until then, bye xx

Happy New Year

Happy new year from

What do I have planned for this year then, well I would like to get this site pretty much complete. Still loads to do such as the image pages and characters page which are next on the agenda as well as more tidying and optimisation.

You might have noticed that I have removed the main reviews and articles pages, I figured I wouldn’t give these things a section but instead keep them linked from pages deep within the site. They will still be listed on the side menu of the home page though.

I have also figured how to get this site a good G00000GLE rank because basically I don’t have one yet. I put the plan into effect today so hopefully we will start to see my ranking go up and traffic to the site improve considerably.

Manga Page Up

I have added a page in the info section on the Akira Manga, not much really but at least it’s something. This site still has lots of work to be done which I am getting around to very slowly.

I understood what you meant Laura about this front page having no purpose and useless info, so I have put a brief synopsis here instead of the stuff I had before, hope you like it better now. I still miss you so much because you are my life. xxx

Hot Linking Scum Balls

I have so far caught two sites hot-linking images from Those lucky sites all had a nasty surprise awaiting their next visitors. I must warn you that I do not take kindly to bandwidth theft and will do everything in my power to see that you leeches don’t do it again. If you want an image please save it to your own site. Thank you… The WEB-GOD.

Two & Half Months Old

This site is roughly two and a half months old and continuing to fill up at a steady rate.

New pages include a Katsuhiro Otomo page, Domu page, temporary akira synopsis of the film and just added is a great article about Steve Oliff and Olyoptics who revolutionised how comic books are coloured, and it only happened to be Akira that they did this on.

I have also added a new download, the Akira FAQ by Taro Rehl. You must read this as it is very clever.

What can you expect? well I am working on my characters page which will give a detailed explanation of each characters involvement in the plot. I will also add some wallpapers ready for downloading including an original AKIRA 2019 wallpaper. Some general image optimisations and tidying up.

This is a big site so please be patient in regards to content, best place to see the progress of content is the MAP, grey means content and white means no content, simple.

…oh yeah, I almost forgot about my lovely style switcher. Now you can customise the site to your preferred taste, the Comic or Film? it’s your choice.
